About Stuttgart

Stuttgart is the capital of the state of Baden-Württemberg in southern Germany. Stuttgart itself was probably founded around 950 AD shortly before the Battle of Lechfeld by Duke Liudolf of Swabia, one of the sons of Holy Roman Emperor Otto I the Great. Stuttgart was elevated to the status of city in 1321 when it became the official royal residence. The territory around Stuttgart was known as the County of Württemberg before the counts were elevated to dukes by the Holy Roman Emperor in 1495, when Stuttgart became the Duchy capital and Ducal residence.
After building car factories of future Mercedes-Benz concern the city endures the present economic boom.

Basic information

Stuttgart is an important transport knot of Germany. In the south of a city there is an international airport.

Nature

The city centre lies in a lush valley, nestling between vineyards and thick woodland close to, but not on the River Neckar. Thus, the city is often described as lying "zwischen Wald und Reben", between forest and vines. In the hot summer months local residents refer to this area as the Stuttgarter Kessel, or Stuttgart cauldron, for its hot and humid climate which is frequently warmer than the surrounding countryside of Württemberg.
By the right Stuttgart can be proud of the mineral waters and pools Loitse and Badkanshtatt (Miniralbäder) possessing greatest reserves of mineral water in the Western Europe and appreciated by the Russian tsars consisting in close relationship with Wurtemburg kings.

Infrastructure

In the centre of Stuttgart, in the next buildings, three branches of the main museum of a federal land Baden-Wurtemberg «Wurtemberg Museum» are located: «the Old Castle» (the richest archaeological exposition, luxury goods since the Middle Ages, arts and crafts subjects, an iconography, a sculpture), "Fruhtkasten" ( museum-collection of musical instruments, audio equipment), «the New Castle» (Roman lapidarium), Stuttgart's unique zoological-botanical garden Wilhelma is one of the most beautiful of its kind in Europe.
In Stuttgart suburbs it is possible to get acquainted with the medieval university city of Tübingen or baroque-city Ludwigsburg, and the convenient arrangement of Stuttgart in the south of Germany allows to visit well-known casino in the neigbor Baden-Baden just in1-1,5 hours or to try Alsace kitchen and wines in the French Strasbourg.
In Untertürkheim district in 2006 new museum Mercedes-Benz was constructed. In Zuffenhausen district in 2009 new museum Porsche was constructed.
